VREES NIET
DNA can be a good way to identify people, so no wonder it’s popular with law enforcement. With every legal or technical possibility they get for using DNA, they get more hungry for the next one. In the Netherlands, at first DNA could only be used in murder and rapecases and then only on demand of the suspect. Then DNA could be used in such cases any way. A few years ago the law made DNA use possible for most crimes, but it might not be enough. The police say they need big databases to do their work properly, so they want to be able to take the DNA of every suspect. The DNA that is now used in criminal research is socalled ‘junkDNA’ with no information about it’s owner (eyecolor, diseases etc). This they also want to change, at least they want to store the raw material for years. Who knows what information can be substracted in the future from all those blobs of slime? We don’t know, but why make such a hassle, it’s against crime so anything is permitted. Ronald Plasterk, a dutch molecular biologist even put his entire DNA-code on the internet just to do his bit in the war against crime. In his eyes, those who are a little more hesitant are on the side of the murderers and rapists. I don’t see why you can’t oppose murderers and rapists and power hungry authorities at the same time. Doesn’t crime teach us not to trust people too much? The police and the DA, they are only people after all, they too can be corrupted by too much power. A DNA-database of everyone in the country gives the owner a lot of power. How many insurancecompanies wouldn’t like to know about peoples diseases and lifeexpectancy… a little corruption here and there could make life so much easier for those caring businessmen. Of course this will never happen in the Netherlands, people are really a lot nicer here and they don’t care about money at all. And if there is an ‘incident’ then measures will be taken. But why make everything so difficult, just store the DNA with their rightful owners i.e. ourselves and only use it in law enforcement for solving murders and rapes.
lyrics
07. Vrees Niet
Geef op!
Geef af!
Verlies!
Jezelf!
TRANSLATION
Vrees Niet / Don’t fear
Give up!
Hand over!
Lose yourself!
Your DNA, a blob of slime, a trace that points, a trace that leads
A trace!
That leads!
A database where nothing is missing and every crime is punished
A wall!
A fortress!
Protects!
Us from!
The robber and the murderer, they are scared because they are not feared
Don’t fear!
Not anymore!
Those who have nothing to hide, trust without reservation
In the managers of the data and their machinery
In the law that always prevails and is never abused
In the authorities who only strive for good things and don’t care about money
In a world full of honesty where man never fails
Give up!
Power!
Lose yourself!
To insurers and medics or to the highest bidder
A wall!
A fortress!
A prison filled with the innocent, where evil reigns
