Behind the dikes some Dutch people are more Dutch than others. The überdutch sew small Dutch flags on their clothes (or let their mother do it probably) and when they give their opinion they don’t speak for themselves, but for The Dutch. Since they are the essence of Dutchness, they feel they ought to have some priviliges. Crime, for instance, should be punished severely according to the flower of the nation. But in their own life, the nationalists aren’t so law abiding, they are using, dealing and growing drugs, just like so many other people. Do they realise they themselves have to live as well in the police-state they cry out for?
When they are critizised they get angry. Their critics are out of touch with ‘the hardworking common people’, so they are uncommon and lazy, but that is not enough, those enemies of the common man have more sinister intentions. After all, Pim Fortuyn was first criticized and then murdered, so anyone who questions the ideas of the new and old friends of Pim could be an accomplice to murder. When a bird made a crack in the window of conservative immigration minister Rita Verdonk, her party was fast to claim it was a bullethole and there had been an assassination attempt on this controversial politician. The unspoken conclusion was that the people who voiced their opinion about Rita Verdonk were somehow responsible for making her a target.
The latest spokesman for the Dutch who only do their job is Geert Wilders. He is a real target, and not just for dizzy birds. Because of his criticism of the islam he has been threatened so many times that he can go nowhere without his bodyguards. This should not silence his critics, but I don’t understand why some people would crawl up the arse of his enemies or even make common cause with them because they don’t like the blonde guy. The Dutch government travelled all over the world to distance themselves from Wilders’ film Fitna. Fitna paints a very black and white picture of the Islam, but I’m afraid that there’s few lies in it. The government knows this if they are honest, but they are more concerned with the reputation of the Netherlands (and good trade relations for Dutch companies). Geert Wilders doesn’t think twice about spicing up his islam-criticism with a big blurp of anti-foreign sentiments. With every statement of him being more extreme than the previous one, it won’t take so long before he has to resort to plain racism to get his shot of media attention. Still I’m afraid that islamic fundamentalists are more racist and certainly much more sexist and homophobic than Geert Wilders will ever be. The enemies of my enemies are not my friends.
