IN EIGEN HAND
In the end free discussion might not determine the future of GM. It’s proponents have less democratic means of getting access to the markets they want. They speculate on GM crops contaminating or getting mixed with non GM-crops. If nobody can tell the difference it’s useless to resist GM. In this way, if only a few countries alow GM crops, the pollen in the wind can force the other countries to accept ‘reality’. Another way of forcing GM on the ‘free’market is starting a tradewar or filing a complaint with the WTO against anyone that doesn’t want to accept GM in their country or has restrictions, like a duty to label products with GM ingredients. The USA, Canada and Argentina filed such a complaint against the EU, after the EU banned new GM-food in 1998. If a free market means you are forced to eat stuff you don’t want, i would rather return to the dark old days of unfree markets where you buy stuff of local producers.
