Some people say GM is an example of man playing god. It scares them because creating should be left to the real god or because they think a created world is boring and unfree to live in. All those people assume that naked monkeys with a big mouth can actually succeed in ‘playing god’. I think people are more like the animals they oppress, than the gods they invent and are far to stupid to totally control something as complex as life. To change some bits of just some plants a little over the years, that might be possible for the ‘lord and master of creation’. But humans radically altering plants, animals and themselves and being in complete control of this whole operation, not just in the beginning, but for all the years to come… I think it’s impossible for us. Just think of all the little things that can have big effects and how will the changed plants and animals affect eachother? Scientists just pretend that they can change life radically, in reality they use the good old trial-and- hide-your- error method. One of the errors they have to hide is the threat of GM to biodiversity. The manipulated species can take over the place of many other species and make them extinct. An ecosystem seems important to me, so i was amazed when i read some years ago that scientists had calculated that we only needed about 20 other species for our survival. The rest could just become extinct, we didn’t have to worry about it! How can scientists ever be so arrogant to think that some computermodel with a cow, a pig, a fish, potatoes, rice and some bacteria can replace a complete ecosystem that developed over millions of years?! Playing god is just a fantasy for humankind, in reality we are kicking ourselves out of paradise.
