about

DAGELIJKS BROOD
Opponents of GM are often told that they should keep their mouth shut because GM is a good solution to hunger. New crops can grow where nothing grew before or they will have a higher nutritional value. In a debating programme on TV dutch mediaperson Marcel van Dam held a tearjerking speach about children in the third world who become blind because of vitamin A deficiency. A new kind of GM-rice would put an end to that: it was going to be enriched by vitamin A. Van Dam didn’t understand why his Green Peace opponent still didn’t welcome GM into his life. Maybe the Green Peace guy knew about carrots…. Hunger isn’t a matter of lack of food, there’s enough food on this earth for everybody. The problem is money and distribution. Even in the rich western countries people can be hungry because they can’t buy food and we will all be very hungry if our supermarkets aren’t stocked every week. On top of that, a lack of genetic variation makes plants and animals more susceptible to diseases. If there’s only one kind of genetically superior rice, just one plague will kill most of it and leave us more hungry than before.

lyrics

06. Dagelijks brood

Vernietigd! Verbrand, voor een paar centen doorgedraaid

En de machine maalt maar door
Zonder geld geen dagelijks brood
De voedselketen wordt langer
Totdat ie breekt
Economische groei die maskeert
Dat grootschaligheid duur wordt betaald
En dat eenzijdigheid zich altijd wreekt

TRANSLATION
Dagelijks Brood / Daily bread
Famine is ruling far away from home

Not here! Where there are no limits to growth
But the farmer is fighting for his existence
Not here! Where supplies are small,
Without transport abundance is fake
And we are all gonna die
Like a rat in a trap

Warehouses filled with butter and grain
Unreachable in times of need
What factory will give us then our daily bread
Without rest the soil is suffering
From golden and identical grain
One plague, a disease will be the end of it

More production to conquer shortage
But where does it have to go
While millions of people are suffering
Here food is destroyed by the shipload
Destructed and burned for a couple of cents

And the wheels are turning on and on
Without money there is no daily bread
The foodchain is getting longer
Until it breaks
Economic growth masks that
Production on a large scale has a high price
And lack of variation will avenge itself always
